Living Room Colour Themes

Debbie Leigh, Design Manager, at ILIV, gives us her tips on choosing the ideal Living Room colour theme for your style and space

"When choosing a living room colour, start by considering the mood you want to create. For a calming atmosphere try soft, neutral tones like beige or light grey, or if you prefer something with more energy and personality, then vibrant colours like teal or mustard yellow might be more to your liking," says Debbie.

"Next, consider the size and natural light of the room. If you have a small space then lighter shades can help to make it feel more open, whereas darker colours are more suited to creating a cosy, intimate vibe. You may also want to bear in mind any existing furniture, décor and adjacent spaces to maintain a cohesive flow. Another good tip is to test sample swatches on your walls at different times of the day to see how lighting affects the colour before making a final decision," Debbie comments.

She continues, "When carefully planned, grey and yellow can work beautifully in a living room. If you are planning to use yellow as your main colour then it’s best to go for a more muted shade to keep the look soft and relaxing. Pale golds and mustards look lovely and mix well with shades of blue and grey for a modern feel. Add in natural accessories and houseplants to create an inviting, paired back scheme. Alternatively, use grey are your backdrop and introduce yellow accent tones in the form of soft furnishings and accessories. This approach is simple, cost-effective and allows you to update your colour scheme with ease."

"It's also worth considering that we use our living rooms a lot during the Winter months, and so it makes sense to make them as cosy and inviting as possible. Colours which evoke a sense of warmth include rich reds and oranges, golds, mustard and berry shades. Use these colours in layers of soft furnishings, such as throws, cushions and curtains and you’ll soon find your room feeling warm and snug creating a sense of comfort which is known to boost wellbeing. Cleverly layered textiles help to create a cohesive look and have a significant impact on the overall feel of a room," advises Debbie.

On trend for 2025

"Green is predicted to be on trend for living rooms in 2025 and is a great choice for creating a natural, calming scheme. Green brings a sense of tranquillity to a room, reflecting the rejuvenating qualities of nature. If you have large windows or plants in the room, this shade is also great for enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Green works with a range of styles from rustic to modern and pairs beautifully with neutrals and wood tones, making it a timeless choice," says Debbie.
