Colour psychology. It’s a thing. The colours we surround ourselves with have the power to significantly shape and shift our moods. Think of phrases like singing the blues or a little ray of sunshine – blues can keep things on the lower side while a burst of yellow will uplift in an instant. So how does this all look and feel in the land of tiles? It goes a little something like this…

LEAN INTO... WARM NEUTRALS FOR NOURISHMENT

Choose an earthy stone tone and its ambient colouring and easy depth of tone will immediately make shoulders drop and a sense of ease wash you. Tiles like our new Hacienda in Sandstone or Studio Minaret tiles with their combination of peachy neutral, white and brown have a warmth to them too so not only will you notice your mood feeling even-tempered but they’ll leave you feeling held and nourished too. What’s not to love?

LEAN INTO... REDS AND PINKS FOR SENSUALITY

Two colours most associated with love and romance, red and pink tiles can cause a real stir, especially when coupled together. Earthy pinks that feel soft and safe to be around – like that in our Carnation Border Rose tile and those in our Studio Jamboree ceramics tiles (in fact called Coral) used en masse have almost a womb-like feeling of tenderness but mix in bursts of berry and scarlet and the playfulness comes to the fore. See our pink and red Studio Jamboree chequerboard to catch our drift. To really up the sensual side, go for red tiles on their own and watch your mood become that bit more seductive.

LEAN INTO... GREENS FOR ENERGY

Greens – they give you a boost when you eat them and they do much the same when you live in a space with them. Green tiles like our new Athens Mosaic tiles and Studio Cassius have a freshness to them that revitalises and helps to pep up energy levels. Typically, lighter green tiles raise energy levels most but even darker forest green tiles like the Amazon finish will have a positive impact, grounding you as well as lifting. Or go for a mix of green shades in one tile with something like Studio Minaret Green Dot.

LEAN INTO... YELLOWS FOR JOY

See things sunnyside-up with yellow tiles in your life. Colour-blocked yellow tiles like the hand painted Summer field Jamboree tiles from our Studio collection will give you a burst of positive energy even if you use them in a small sense (splashbacks and the such) but weave yellow into your decor in a more accented way with a tile like Sorrento Sabbia from the Nonna’s Kitchen collection and yellow becomes more mellow. Lemon-fresh or mustard magic, being around yellow 100% brings out the more joyful side of life.

LEAN INTO... BLUES FOR CHILL

Sure, blues are linked to melancholy but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Style a blue tile in a sombre way and if your mood is on the lower side, it may well not encourage you out to the other side. But go for a blue tile like the multicoloured Studio Souk with its powdered blue meets brown and sage green star and suddenly blue becomes about tranquility. The mix of tones shows a) how well blue gets along with other colours and b) how the companion colours take on each other’s qualities. Even deep, dark and mood navy blues like those in the Minaret Pink Dot and Studio Cosmos tile in Midnight become all about their chill out character with other colours there to temper its depths.

LEAN INTO... BLACKS FOR CONFIDENCE

And finally, to the dark side, where black tiles can trigger a hidden confidence in you. Every colour has layers to it and the effect they can have on you varies, so while black might be associated with seriousness, it also is with mystery and power which in turn result in quiet confidence. It’s something to do with black’s sleek and chic nature – one look at our statement-making East Village tiles in Nero or the slightly more subtle basketweave version will show you that. A room tiled with either of these appears sophisticated and assured, and it’s nigh-on impossible to not let that rub off on your mood so you can seize the day, head held stylishly high.
